01

Where Bank of China (Hong Kong) sits in the market

BOCHK gives a borrower two unusually clear reference points: a smaller unsecured product for speed and a full SFGS route for a larger, longer request. That makes the bank easier to compare than providers whose public pages show only a contact form.

Small-business loans and equipment finance. The shortlist decision should follow the transaction and repayment source rather than the familiarity of the brand.

Published products and evidence

Small Business LoanSFGS 80%Equipment financeTrade finance

The Small Business Loan page publishes up to HK$2 million, as long as 60 months and a stated 48-hour route after all required documents arrive. BOCHK's SFGS material shows up to HK$18 million over ten years and a guarantee-fee rebate of up to HK$100,000.

A public limit is a ceiling or example, not a promise. The legal facility, approved amount, rate, security and conditions arrive only after credit assessment.

Watch closely

Questions before signing

  • No universal rate applies to every borrower
  • Compare net proceeds and every dated payment
  • Check guarantees, security and early-settlement terms
03

The tradeoff behind the headline

The small-loan product requires at least two years of operation, and the bank can still request supporting information even where audited accounts or collateral are not listed as standard requirements. Speed depends on a complete file, which is the part most advertisements place in the footnotes.

Ask which approval conditions remain after an indicative decision. Account opening, updated accounts, a valuation, guarantees or security documentation can change both timing and total cost.

04

Cost questions for the written quote

Ask for the annualised rate after any discount period, then compare the instalment and revolving versions on total dollars paid. A revolving limit can look cheaper while it remains partly unused, but annual review and cancellation rights deserve close attention.

  • Record net proceeds after every deducted fee.
  • Identify the reference rate, margin, floor and reset date.
  • Request settlement figures after 6, 12 and 24 months.
  • List every personal guarantee, charge, covenant and review right.
05

Application file

Prepare registration and ownership records, six to twelve months of major bank statements, accounts, tax returns, receivables and payables ageing, existing debt, purpose evidence and a downside cash forecast. Reconcile sales to deposits and explain unusual transfers before the credit reviewer needs to ask.

A digital or fast process still depends on a coherent file. Published timeframes often begin after all required information arrives and may refer to a preliminary amount rather than cash available for drawdown.

Comparison discipline

Price the same HK$1m request

Ask Bank of China (Hong Kong) and two alternatives for net proceeds of HK$1m over the same period. Compare BOCHK with HSBC on smaller unsecured finance, then add OCBC or DBS when the request moves into the SFGS range.

Editorial verdict

Bank of China (Hong Kong) is a credible comparison point for small-business loans and equipment finance. Its score reflects public information, product breadth and practical fit. It does not claim that the lender is cheapest or most likely to approve every company.

Keep the provider on the shortlist only if its written structure matches the cash event funding the repayments. A lower monthly payment can hide a longer guarantee, higher total interest or a facility that stays open after the business has stopped benefiting from it.
