Important distinction

An adviser can prepare a file without becoming the lender

Hong Kong consultants describe services ranging from bankability reviews to application preparation and lender matching. Ask whether the engagement is advice, document work or a referral, and obtain the named recipient before sharing records.

The HKMA has stated that banks ceased accepting loan applications referred by intermediaries. For licensed money-lender loans, an intermediary should appear in the Companies Registry's appointed-third-party register. Never treat a consultant's approval claim as a bank decision.

Before you engage

Five questions that protect the application

  1. What exact service are you providing, and which legal entity signs the engagement?
  2. Which bank, lender or money lender will receive my information?
  3. How are you paid, when is the fee triggered and what happens after rejection?
  4. Will any formal credit search occur, and what data consent remains active?
  5. If a money lender is involved, where is the intermediary's appointment recorded?
